It's been quite a while since the last time I posted a recipe containing fruit. Truth is winter fruit is not exactly the most exciting and diverse but it is the season of citrus therefore the best time to eat them.
It's not a secret I'm a smoothie fan and I love trying hundreds of combinations, and this one is so good! Somehow either for its colour or flavour, or maybe both, when you drink it you already feel it is good for yourself...
This smoothie is particularly appropriate since now it is citrus season, plenty of fruits bustling with vitamins. There is still people around with colds and more will come with the season change and the spring so it is a good thing to prepare the body with a good vitamin shot to boost our immune system.
I used blood oranges that apart from being visually spectacular they have that sweet taste that is so good. As you know the carrots are a classic that combine so well with these fruits, specially oranges. I also like using the pulp as that's where all the fibre is. To balance the tartness we can add some maple syrup that as always is the perfect sweetener, and a banana to make it creamy. I usually freeze them when they are ripe to use on these smoothies, but you can use them fresh. You'll see I also add some hemp seeds, a great vegetable protein that adds texture and provides other health benefits as Omega 3 and 6 oils, vitamins and fiber.
In short, a smoothie that is a multivitamin bomb, super healthy and good, really good.
Here's the recipe for this citrus, carrot and ginger multivitamin smoothie.
CITRUS, CARROT AND GINGER SMOOTHIE RECIPE
INGREDIENTS: (Serves 2 glasses)
- 2 blood oranges
- 1 ripe frozen banana
- 2 oranges
- 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 lime
- 1 piece fresh ginger, peeled
- 2 carrots, peeled
- 2 tangerines
- 1 pinch of turmeric powder
- Maple syrup
- Hemp seeds
- Water
PREPARATION:
- First we grind the carrots with the ginger with a bit of water so we don't find any chunks later.
- Squeeze out the oranges, tangerines, lemon, lime and pour the juice and the pulp in the blender jar.
- Add the banana, a pinch of turmeric, a handful of hemp seeds, some maple syrup and blend at high speed until it is well combined and you get a creamy texture.
- Taste and add more maple syrup if you like it sweeter and/or water if you prefer it less dense.
- It is now ready to serve!
