Cereals are the classic meal that have been established in the majority of occidental families and houses for decades.
So much that we actually even eat them as a meal substitute either as a snack or even for supper.
They are very healthy and provide energy, but to be quite honest the big brands offer cereals that contain plenty of refined sugars, colorants, flavor enhancers and so on…
Nowadays it is so easy to choose a healthier option. We can find natural and additive free cereals at the majority of grocery stores or natural food stores. It is so simple to prepare this homemade muesli. You just need to select different cereals like oats, rice or quinoa, amaranth…and add some seeds and nuts like sesame, almonds or like in this case walnutsand pumpkin seeds. It goes really well with dry fruits like raisins, cranberries, apple, coconut, banana… or chocolate chips to satisfy those with a sweet tooth As a sweetener, nothing better and healthier than canadian maple syrup.
Here’s the recipe for an easy-to-make homemade muesli with cranberries and maple syrup (gluten free and no refined sugars).
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 cups puffed millet
- 1 1/2 c. oats (gluten free)
- 1/2 c. teff flakes
- 1 c. walnuts
- 1 c. dry cranberries
- 3 tbsp. pumpkin seeds
- 6 tbsp. maple syrup
- 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
METHOD:
- Preheat the oven to 200ºC
- Chop the pumpkin seeds, walnuts and cranberries.
- Put all dry ingredients in a bowl and stir.
- Add the maple syrup and mix to spread homogenously.
- In an oven pan or rack place some baking paper.
- Pour the bowl mixture all over the tray distributing it well so it gets roasted evenly.
- Low the oven temperature to 180ºC and place the oven rack inside. Bake for around 15 minutes or when you see it is golden.
- Remove from the oven and stir it up a bit.
- Let it cool and store in an hermetic glass jar.
